New Study Highlights Effective Passive Cooling Strategies during Heatwaves
A new study by Douaa Al-Assaad et al. evaluates resilient passive cooling strategies in buildings during heat waves across different climates. Using simulations, the research evaluates the performance of passive cooling strategies such as solar shading, cool envelope materials, advanced glazing, and ventilative cooling across five climate zones and three heatwave periods.
Findings indicate that while all strategies help mitigate heatwave impact, their effectiveness varies by climate. Notably, by optimizing favorable wind conditions, ventilative cooling strategies can enhance heatwave recovery in all climates.
This work is an aggregation and analysis of the simulations conducted by IEA EBC’s Annex 80: Resilient Cooling of Buildings.
