Ventilative cooling on its own may not be sufficient to avoid overheating problems and maintain a good thermal indoor environment during heat waves. The effectiveness of ventilative cooling is strongly dependent on the building's design, the local climate, and the occupant's behavior. A hybrid cooling approach to building design combining passive cooling strategies such as natural ventilation, shading, thermal mass etc., with active cooling strategies such as mechanical cooling should be followed.
